SSSC rules for Volleyball – Court 6’s (Recreational)

© SSSC 1996-2020

NEW RULE: Intermediate leagues will follow reverse 6s rules. See below for details.

Volleyball – Court 6’s (Recreational)

Please arrive 15 minutes early to ensure that your games start on time. Regular season matches are 45 minutes in length and are comprised of two RALLY POINT games to 21 points and one final game to 15 points.  The cap is also at 21 points and 15 points. Therefore, if the score is tied 20-20, the next point wins (i.e. first team to 21 points). If a match concludes early, the teams can continue to play, but the score of the fourth game will not be recorded. Please arrive early to ensure you get the full use of your allotted court time. Regardless of when your game begins your game will always end on time to allow the succeeding games to begin at their scheduled time.

Time Keeping: The SSC Event Coordinator on site will be keeping track of time and will determine the end of your game. In this instance, you will receive a warning indicating the final five (5) minutes of your game, a ‘Last Serve’ call and a final signal for the end of your game. Once the final signal occurs your game is over.

Changing Sides: Teams will change sides after each set.

Players

Teams are comprised of six (6) players with a minimum of two (2) women and two (2) men on the court.  A default for the first game of a match will occur if any team cannot field a squad 10 minutes after the official start time.  The second game of the match will be defaulted 20 minutes after the official start time and the third and final game of the match will be defaulted 30 minutes after the official start time (e.g. a team that defaults the first game, can still play the second and third games, providing that enough players eventually arrive).

Gender Numbers: Teams are comprised of six (6) players with a minimum of two (2) women and two (2) men on the court.

Defaults: A default for the first game of a match will occur if any team cannot field a squad 10 minutes after the official start time.  The second game of the match will be defaulted 20 minutes after the official start time and the third and final game of the match will be defaulted 30 minutes after the official start time (e.g. a team that defaults the first game, can still play the second and third games, providing that enough players eventually arrive). A team can play with a minimum of 5 people, as long as two (2) players are women and two (2) players are men.

Exceptions: Both teams can agree to play with any number of people on the court up to six (6) players, with any ratio of females and males. If both teams agree, then the game counts.

Playing Area

All Volleyball matches will take place on a regulation-sized Volleyball Court.

Equipment/Set Up

All equipment (poles, nets and balls) will be provided and set-up on-site by SSC staff.

Teams are also responsible for keeping track of the score. Please designate one person to keep track of the score.

Volleyball 101

The following outlines the basis of the rules of Volleyball 6’s Intermediate/Recreational Programs:

Discrepancies:

All games are self-officiated. Any disputes will be discussed amongst the two team captains. Please play honestly and call your own infractions (lift, net, etc.). If a dispute cannot be settled the point should be re-served

Regular Season Matches

Games can be tied during the regular season.

Playoffs Eligibility and Tiebreak

There must be a winner in a playoff match. In the event that the match ends in a tie, teams will partake in the following tie-breaker until a winner is determined:

In the playoffs, matches are best 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 5 (depending on program length). If playing 5 sets, each set is to 25 points (capped at 25. If playing 3 sets, the first two sets are to 21 and the third set is to 15 (capped at 21 and 15). If the deciding set is tied at the end of regulation time, teams will play one more point to determine the winner.

Rough Play

Any rough or physical play will result in immediate expulsion from further league play and may result in a lifetime league expulsion. Please see the Sport and Social Club General Policy for our official guidelines on this subject. It is recognized that incidental contact between players is inevitable; however, all players should go out of their way to avoid creating an unsafe play.  This rule supersedes all others.

Please note that on-site staff members have full autonomy when supervising games. Games may be stopped entirely, players may be asked to leave the playing area or be removed from the game entirely under their discretion.

Alcohol

There are absolutely no alcoholic beverages permitted on SSC property. Any offenders will be asked to leave the league without refund. No exceptions.
